Rani Garner’s primary focus is to paint light - natural light in its natural setting. "A golden, sunbathed landscape, a dazzling glow of sunlight glimpsed through trees, or floating clouds reflecting the last rays before sundown - I want to freeze these moments and preserve that feeling on canvas," says Rani.
In choosing subjects she thinks of the landscape as a setting for a drama of light and shadow play, often with suggestions of figures. Many of her scenes are imagined, giving them a dreamlike quality. "I am especially fascinated by how illumination lends an aura of significance to objects, transforming the ordinary into extraordinary," says Rani.
An interesting fact about Rani’s work is that she first creates the high-contrast light effects at the start and then lets the painting suggest itself to her as she continues to work.
